CHANA DAL (CHOLAR DAL)



Ingredients
  • Chana dal, soaked in water - 1/2 cup
  • Asafoetida - a pinch
  • Dry red chilli - 2
  • Cinnamon stick - 1, 1/2 inch long
  • Bay leaf - 2
  • Cumin seeds - 1/3 tsp
  • Ginger paste - 1/2 tsp
  • Green chillies - 2 to 3
  • Coconut, sliced - 2 tsp
  • Raisins - 2 tsp
  • Tomatoes, chopped - 1 small size
  • Turmeric powder - 1/2 tsp
  • Garam masala powder - 1/2 tsp
  • Roasted coriander powder - 1/2 tsp
  • Ghee - 1 tsp
  • Oil - as required
  • Sugar - to taste
  • Salt - to taste



Method

Drain the water and take the chana dal in a pressure cooker and cook it with turmeric powder, salt, tomatoes, green chillies and 1 cup water for 3 to 4 whistles. Let it stand for sometime to release the pressure inside the cooker. After that open the lid and keep aside.

Heat one tsp ghee and 1tsp oil together. Add cumin seeds & asafoetida. Add bay leaf, dry red chilli and cinnamon stick. Sauté it for one min. Add ginger paste. Fry it. Add raisins and sliced coconuts. Fry it for an another min. Add roasted coriander powder. Now add the boiled chana dal to it. Add garam masala powder, sugar and some warm water. Let it boil till it becomes medium thick. Enjoy it with luchi/ kachori.
