FISH CHOP | MACHER CHOP



Fish Chop or Macher Chop - a deep fried Bengali snacks is more than enough to satisfy your taste-buds. Basically made of boneless fish fillet along with mashed boiled potatoes and spices. Since it is rainy season, this is perfect Bengali style snacks recipe to enjoy with a cup of hot tea. You can serve it as a starter also to your guests. You can use any fish, from which it is easy to remove bones. Here I use Tilapia fish.



Ingredients

  • Fish, boneless - 500 gm (Tilapia or Katla)
  • Besan - 1/2 cup
  • All purpose flour - 1/2 cup
  • Poppy seeds - 1 tsp
  • Baking powder - a pinch
  • Onion, finely chopped - 3 large size
  • Ginger, finely chopped - 1 tsp
  • Garlic, finely chopped - 1 tsp
  • Boiled Potatoes, mashed - 2 large size
  • Green Chillies, finely chopped - 2 tsp
  • Lime Juice - 1 tsp
  • Fresh Coriander, chopped - 1/2 cup
  • Red Chili Powder - 1 tsp
  • Pepper Powder - 1/3 tsp
  • Garam Masala - 1/2 tsp
  • Turmeric Powder - 1 tsp
  • Salt - to taste
  • Oil - for deep fry

Method

Boil water in a pan. Put the fish fillet into it. Bring it to boil for about 5 mins. Drain water and remove excess water by using a kitchen towel from the fish fillet. 

In a pan, heat 3 tsp oil. Add the chopped ginger and garlic. Add chopped onion and green chillies. Fry it for a min in high flame. Add the turmeric powder, salt, garam masala powder, red chilli powder and pepper powder. Mix well. Now add the boiled fish and the potatoes. Give it a nice mix. Add lime juice and fresh chopped coriander leaves. Stir continuously and make it dry. Put it out in a bowl. Make small equal size balls from it. In a pan or wok heat oil for deep fry.


To make the batter, in a mixing bowl, take the besan and all purpose flour. Add some salt, turmeric powder, poppy seeds and baking powder. Add some water and mix well. Make sure that the batter should be lumps free. Add 3 tsp hot oil to this batter. Give it a nice mix.


Take one fish ball, dip this ball into the batter and put it into the hot oil. Fry in medium flame till they turn golden brown and crispy. Enjoy this snacks with a cup of hot tea.
